What’s Oxygen Concentratoe

A portable oxygen concentrator (POC) is a device used to provide oxygen therapy to people that require greater oxygen concentrations than the levels of ambient air. It is similar to a home oxygen concentrator (OC), but is smaller in size and more mobile. They are small enough to carry and many are now FAA-approved for use on airplanes.

Development

In the late 1970s, medical oxygen concentrators were produced. Union Carbide and Bendix Corporation were two early producers[1]. They were initially designed as a way to offer a steady supply of oxygen to homes without the need for bulky tanks and frequent delivery. [2] Manufacturers started creating portable versions in the 2000s. [3] Since their invention, POCs’ reliability has increased, and depending on the patient’s breathing rate, they now produce between one and six liters of oxygen per minute (LPM). [4] The most recent versions of continuous flow (CF) units ranged in weight from 10 to 20 pounds, whereas intermittent flow only items weighted between 2.8 and 9.9 pounds (1.3 and 4.5 kg) (4.5 to 9.0 kg).

Operation

POCs work using the same pressure swing adsorption technique as a home concentrator. [7] A POC’s basic setup consists of a miniature air compressor, a cylinder filled with a sieve, a reservoir to equalize pressure, valves, and tubes. The internal compressor pushes this air through a molecular sieve, a set of chemical filters, during the first part of the first cycle. Zeolite (microporous, crystalline aluminosilicate) filter surfaces attract nitrogen molecules by adsorption more strongly than oxygen molecules, removing the nitrogen from the air and leaving behind more concentrated oxygen. The oxygen and trace amounts of other gases are released into the pressure equalizing reservoir after the first cylinder reaches the necessary purity and pressure is about 20 psi.

Pulse dose

The smallest units are pulse dose POCs, which are also known as intermittent-flow or on-demand POCs. They frequently weigh as little as 5 pounds (2.2 kg). Because of their modest size, the patient can carry them without using up treatment-related energy. In this instance, the machine sporadically delivers an amount (or bolus) of oxygen measured in milliliters per breath (mL/breath). The key to making the units so small without compromising the duration of oxygen supply is their capacity for oxygen conservation. [14] The majority of the POC systems used today supply oxygen to the patient via a nasal cannula and on-demand (pulse) basis.
